New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday alleged that an attempt is being made to turn the Lakhimpur Kheri incident into a Hindu versus Sikh battle.
He said the attempt is not only creating ‘immoral and wrong perception’ but is also ‘dangerous’.
In a tweet, he said: “An attempt to turn #LakhimpurKheri into a Hindu vs Sikh battle is being made. Not only is this an immoral & false narrative, it is dangerous to create these fault-lines & reopen wounds that have taken a generation to heal. We must not put petty political gains above national unity.”
It’s notable that Varun Gandhi is regularly airing his views on Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
On October 4, 2021, the BJP MP from Pilibhit shared the letter on Twitter that he had written to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with a demand for strict action against the persons involved in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
On 5th and 7th October 2021, he shared a purported video on Twitter regarding the violence that took place in Lakhimpur Kheri and demanded action against the culprits.
“This video of deliberately crushing farmers with vehicles in Lakhimpur Kheri will shake anyone’s soul. Police should take cognizance of this video and immediately arrest the owners of these vehicles, the people sitting in them, and other persons involved in this case,” Varun tweeted in Hindi on October 5, 2021.
On October 7, 2021, he tweeted: “The video is crystal clear. Protestors cannot be silenced through murder. There has to be accountability for the innocent blood of farmers that has been spilled and justice must be delivered before a message of arrogance and cruelty enters the minds of every farmer.”
It’s notable that Varun Gandhi did not find a place in the BJP’s new National Executive Committee.
His mother and former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi was also dropped from the BJP’s National Executive Committee, which was announced hours after Varun’s October 7, 2021, tweet.
Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in violence in the Tikonia area of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh on October 3, 2021.
Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra was arrested on October 9, 2021, nearly after 12 hours of questioning in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. He has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. (PW News)
