New Delhi: A total of 19 candidates with criminal background have won election in just-concluded assembly polls in Uttarakhand, says a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Uttarakhand Election Watch.

The ADR released the comparison report after analysing the self-sworn affidavits of the total 70 winning candidates in Uttarakhand.

Out of the 70 winning candidates analysed in 2022, 19(27%) winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Out of 70 MLAs analysed during Uttarakhand Assembly elections in 2017, 22(31%) MLAs had declared criminal cases against themselves.

Out of the 19 tainted MLAs in 2022, ten have serious criminal charges against them.

Tie Between BJP and Congress

There is a tie between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC, or Congress) as far as the winning candidates with a criminal background in 2022 is concerned.

Out of the BJP’s total 47 MLAs, eight (08) have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Out of the BJP’s eight tainted MLAs, five (05) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits, the ADR report said.

Congress has won 19 seats in 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly elections. The party’s eight (08) winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Out of INC’s eight tainted MLAs, four (04) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Two Independent MLAs and a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA also have criminal cases registered against themselves.

Out of two Independent MLAs, one faces serious criminal charges, the ADR report said.

It’s notable that the Supreme Court of India has passed stringent orders to discourage political parties from fielding candidates with criminal background in the elections; the political parties still continue to field such candidates who have high chances of winning seats for their respective parties.
