ECI bans exit polls related to assembly elections in five states

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on January 29, 2022, banned all exit polls related to the upcoming assembly elections in the five states.

The ban comes into force 7 am on February 10, 2022, to 6.30 pm on March 7, 2022.

The Election Commission said in the notification that no person shall conduct any exit poll and publish or publicize the result of any exit poll in print or in any other manner.

According to media reports, Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh Ajay Kumar Shukla also said in a statement that the conduct of exit polls, its publication in print or electronic media or its campaign has been banned from 7 am on February 10 to 6.30 pm on March 7.

The statement also said that any person violating the order shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both. The Chief Electoral Officer further said that it has also been directed that during the period of 48 hours ending with the time fixed for the conclusion of polling in the respective polling areas of the general elections, any opinion poll or the display of any election related matter including the results of any other poll shall be prohibited.  (PW News)
