Odisha: 82 Zilla Parishad members face criminal charges

Biju Janata Dal tops the list with 66 tainted members

New Delhi: The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) report says that 82 zilla parishad members in Odisha face criminal charges. The ruling Biju Janata Dal tops the list with 66 tainted zilla parishad members.

The ADR along with Odisha Election Watch released the report after analysing the self-sworn affidavits of 726 out of 851 Zilla Parishad Members in the Odisha Panchayat Elections 2022. The rest of the affidavits couldn’t be analysed as they were not available or uploaded on the website at the time of making this report, informed the ADR.

“82 (11%) out of 726 analyzed zilla parishad members have declared criminal cases against themselves. 65(9%) zilla parishad members have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to attempt to murder, crimes against women etcetera,” the report says.

It adds that 15 zilla parishad members have declared cases of attempt to murder (IPC Section-307), and 12 zilla parishad members have declared cases related to crimes against women.

Party wise Zilla parishad members with Criminal Cases:

Biju Janata Dal: 66 (10%) out of 661 zilla parishad members from BJD have declared criminal cases against themselves in their self-sworn affidavits.

Bharatiya Janata Party: Six (16%) out of 37 zilla parishad members from BJP face criminal cases.

Indian National Congress: 7 (32%) out of 22 zilla parishad members from INC have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha: out of 3 zilla parishad members from JMM, one (33%) faces criminal charges.

CPI(M): The party has scored 100% as its lone elected zilla parishad member faces criminal case(s).

Independent: out of 2 Independent zilla parishad members, 1 (50%) faces criminal case(s).

Party wise Zilla parishad members with Serious Criminal Cases:

Biju Janata Dal: 53 (8%) out of 661 zilla parishad members from BJD have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their self-sworn affidavits.

Indian National Congress: Six (27%) out of 22 zilla parishad members from INC have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Bharatiya Janata Party: Four (11%) out of 37 zilla parishad members from BJP face serious criminal cases.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha: out of 3 zilla parishad members from JMM, one (33%) faces serious criminal charges.

Independent: out of 2 Independent zilla parishad members, 1 (50%) faces serious criminal case(s).
