it’s notable that the election for the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly is being held in eight phases. Two phases have been completed on March 27 and April 1. Polling will be held for the remaining six phases on April 6, April 10, April 17, April 22, April 26 and April 29. The number of polling booths in West Bengal is 101,916 compared to 77,413 in 2016—an increase of 31.65 per cent. The results will be announced on May 2.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is aiming to end Mamata Banerjee led TMC government’s 10-year rule and form the first BJP government in West Bengal.
In 2011, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee ended the Left Front’s 34-year rule and formed the government by winning 227 seats in the 294-member Assembly in alliance with the Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist). TMC itself won 184 seats. (PW Desk)
